Eight-year-old Sara Lu wrote this impressive story about Bonobos cousins of the Chimpanzee. As you will see, Sara writes well beyond her years.
A Sad Day for Bobo
Written By, Sara Lu
One morning, little Bobo woke up at the sound of his mother’s voice screeching: “THE HUMANS ARE HERE, THE HUMANS ARE HERE!” He realized what was happening; it was the poaching humans his mother had told him about. Then suddenly there was what felt like a big earthquake, exactly like how his mother had described. Bobo quickly got up and ran to join his Bonobo group troop and escaped the poaching humans to set off the search for a new village.
After few hours of walking, they were hungry and needed to find some food. Bonobos are omnivorous, so they have a big range of food selections. Bobo and other baby Bonobos were looking for some plants and picking up some fruits. Meanwhile, the rest of the adult Bonobo group troop were hunting for small mammals. When they were almost finished picking and hunting the food, Bobo’s mother, the female leader, called all of them together and started trying to share the food as a big family. After having dinner, they were all tired and went up to the trees to sleep. The next morning, all of the troop members were awake, but Ben did not get up because he had a high fever and cannot move at all without extreme pain. Ben was too weak to keep up with the group, so they took turns holding his hand and hugging him to say a final goodbye before he passed away. Bobo was confused until his mother explained that Ben had a sickness called Ebola which Bobo’s uncle had the same disease and passed away.
It was hours before they found a new place to build a village. When they got there, they were all very thirsty, so they decided to go to the Congo river to have a drink. While they were drinking, suddenly a crocodile bursted out of the water and tried to eat Kina who screeched for help. The whole troop tried to save her, but they did not succeed. They were very sad because they already lost two troop members and they gave each other hugs to comfort themselves. The night was coming soon, so they needed to finish building their new village to have a cozy home to rest. However, they found out that the humans were already there cutting of the trees with their homes on it. The big cranes and machines were carrying and pushing all of the trees and everything else down, so now they didn’t have a lot of places left that they could live. The people who work for the black market also want to capture one of the Bonobos for bush meat. These people came to where the Bonobos live, and by their luck they found the troop. The humans quickly hid and set traps and got their guns out to shoot Hannah and capture Jacob for bush meat to sell at the black market. Now there was only a family of four Bonobos left, and they didn’t realize that some humans were following them. SUDDENLY there were humans all around them, but this time the only difference was that they didn’t have traps and guns. In fact, they had nothing at all!!! These are good humans who carefully approached Bobo’s family and bring them to a good home.
Bonobo: its scientific name is called Pan Paniscus, and this animal is led by the females so they are more peaceful compared to the average animal kingdom. The Bonobo is endangered because of many reasons, including habitat loss, civil unrest, poaching and being hunted by humans for its bush meat.
There are a lot of other Bonobos that need our help, and many ways for us to protect them. For example, we humans should not hunt them again for bush meat and do not disturb their habitat or poach them.
Some additional facts about Bonobos: Bonobos are omnivorous animals so they have a big range of food selections including: seeds, sprouts, mushroom and they also eat different plants such as leaves, bark, pith, stems, flowers and roots. They will hunt little mammals to eat, but also the tiny earthworms, honey, eggs and soil. We have to protect these animals, not only the Bonobos, but also a lot other animals that need our help. We have to protect these species whether big or small, insect or bug, human or animal.
